Parenting Tips - Building the Relationship
- Parent through love, not fear. Think of the relationship you will have with your child when he/she is an adult
- Children feel secure when they know and understand their boundaries
- Children sometimes like to hear ‘no’ - they are often just testing you
- Gently encourage good habits, manners etc., that will stand to them for life
- Correct negative behaviour in private at an appropriate time
- Children must accept the consequences of their actions
- Positive attention, emphasising what’s good, works best
- You can’t put an old head on young shoulders, we all learn from experience
- Try not to let your own moods affect your response to negative behaviour
- Give time and attention to your child
- Talk when your child is ready
- Everybody is different
• each child is different
• you are different at every stage of your life
• each situation is different
• your relationship with each of your children is different
