– If your method of dealing with a situation
is not working, try another way of dealing with it
– Give children choices and let them be involved
in some decision-making. This helps their confidence and prepares them
for involvement in the outside world
– Encourage independence - ask yourself “what’s
the worst that can happen if I don’t interfere in this situation?”
– Discuss clearly the behaviour that is acceptable
to both you and your child and agree on the consequences if they do
not comply with the rules. It’s better if the discipline imposed
does not cause resentment.
Negotiate! Negotiate! Negotiate!....
– Take time out in an emotional situation. Deal
with the issues when both of you are calm
– Separate the behaviour from the person. Ensure
the child knows he/she is loved and accepted, it is the behaviour that
is unacceptable
– Remember everybody is learning – the
child and the parent – nobody can get everything perfect every
time
