New Volunteer Recruitment Procedure

Recruitment:
Once the need for new volunteers has been identified we will plan recruitment and training.  This typically takes place every 12 to 18 months. The course will be subject to sufficient funding and participants.

The role will be advertised as follows:

  • Parentline website and social media
  • National media (where funds allow)
  • PR
  • Volunteer Ireland
  • Activelink
  • Other appropriate media.

Each applicant must complete an application form 
The form is then recorded on the Salesforce system in line with GDPR rules
The application form will be reviewed by two Parentline representatives
Assuming the application form is satisfactory the applicant will be invited for an interview
The interview will be conducted by two parentline representative
Interviews will take place in the Carmichael Centre.

Skills/experience required

  • Ability to listen
  • Committed to a three-hour shift per week in the Parentline Helpline Room
  • Ability and willingness to learn
  • committed to ongoing monthly and annual training
  • Respect the caller and any issues they may have
  • Non-judgemental
  • Be absolutely confidential

Training:
After a successful interview, the applicant will be invited to attend a training course.  All training takes place in the Carmichael Centre and is given by the Parentline training team.  A typical course will take place over 2 – 3 full Saturdays and 3 -4 evenings.  Each applicant must be available to attend all training.

After the “classroom” training the applicant must spend at least 10 hours actively listening to an experienced helpline facilitator on calls. The trainee may then take calls but must be listened to by an experienced facilitator for at least 10 hours active calls before taking a call by themselves. The trainee together with the trainer and/or CEO will plan for the trainee to proceed to take calls by themselves.

Applicants/trainees will be monitored and reviewed throughout all stages or application and training process.

When the trainee is deemed trained they will receive a letter advising them of their success and given a Volunteer Policy to sign.

A review meeting is held after each intake of trainees.  The above is subject to change.
